The Nips, also known as The Nipple Erectors, was Shane MacGowan's first band, before joining The Millwall Chainsaws which would become Pogue Mahone (Gaelic for "kiss my arse") which would become The Pogues. He decided that he wanted to start a punk band after seeing the Sex Pistols in concert, which got him together with Shanne Bradley and several other people (the line-up changed multiple times except for Shane and Shanne). They enjoyed relative popularity in the area, enough so that they recorded a few singles, one studio album, plus one live album for Chiswick Records (the label that first signed both Motorhead and The Damned). Unfortunately, the band broke up after two years with only a handful of recordings. Very recently, their one studio album "Bops, Babes, Booze, & Bovver" was released on CD for the first time, with two bonus studio tracks that had been lost in the vault for over twenty five years! You can buy the album on Amazon for $10. It's well worth it, easily one of my favorite recordings from the original punk scene. You get the songs "So Pissed Off," "Nervous Wreck," and "Private Eye," all worth the price of admission in and of themselves. Amazon lists the album as being the complete studio output. That's not true. What they are missing is the Happy Song 7", two very cool songs that ended up on a vinyl known as "The Tits of Soho" in... 1979, I believe. On top of that, I've included the live album that was never officially released on CD, "Only The End Of The Beginning." It's good quality, and the performance is top notch. And if that's not enough, they play songs that are not on their studio repertoire. This is everything you could want out of a live album, this would've been such a cool band to see live.

And this is my plea to anyone reading this: if you have any other recordings by this band, live shows, bootlegs, outtakes, Peel sessions, please let me know. I will post them for the world to enjoy and give you credit for your generous gift.... but really, I just crave more of this band.

Great post! Some corrections though - they didn't record any LPs. The CD that's around is a collection of their 7"s (plus 2 unreleased songs) but missing the Happy Song 7", presumably because of licensing issues (?).
The Tits of Soho was a bootleg which came out much later. The Happy Song 7" was actually produced by Paul Weller, who was a big Nips fan.
